The Brabant Wall

The Brabantse Wal is a striking landscape in West Brabant, on the border with Zeeland and Flanders (Belgium). The Brabantse Wal lies in the municipalities of Woensdrecht, Bergen op Zoom and part of Steenbergen and Roosendaal.

Most striking in the landscape of the Brabantse Wal is the steep edge: an abrupt transition from the higher lying sandy grounds to the lower lying sea clay polders. This steep edge winds from Ossendrecht along Hoogerheide, Woensdrecht, Bergen op Zoom and Halsteren to Steenbergen. The steep ridge is designated as an area of geological value. The steilrand reaches heights of about 20 meters above sea level. This steep edge, also called high edge and hem, was probably created by erosion by the river Schelde and by the sea. The higher sandy soils are mostly cultivated and covered with forest and heath. The lower clay soils are mainly used for agriculture. There are also creek remnants. At the foot of the Brabant Wall near Bergen op Zoom lies the Markiezaatsmeer, a part of the Oosterschelde closed off by the Delta Works.

The area is popular with hikers, cyclists, cyclists, horseback riders and(water) athletes. From the Brabantse Wal there are beautiful views. Large parts of the Brabantse Wal are, in addition to being geologically valuable, also designated as a protected natural and cultural-historical area. The Brabantse Wal Foundation is committed to preserving these values.
